Architecture firm HED recently moved into a new office in Los Angeles, California, which they designed themselves.

“The new HED LA office is designed to foster creativity, promote collaboration, and support the well-being of our community. Activity is focused on the HUB: an open space that is the center of activity for the entire office. The HUB extends from one end of the building to the other. On one end is the central production facility, with the model shop/maker space, material library, pin-up spaces, interactive projection walls, and flexible team “war room” areas. On the opposite end is the “front door” of arrival, reception, display area, meeting rooms, lounging and casual seating for clients and staff. Connecting the two ends is the café, with and expansive island that functions as a community gathering space and collaboration zone with adjacent collaboration booths that add another layer of collaboration and community engagement. Free-address and dedicated workstation areas flow around the HUB, and pin-up and spontaneous collaboration spaces extend throughout the entire space. In addition, areas of more quiet focus ranging in size from individual to 2-4- and 4–6-person small huddles, to large and extra-large conference rooms are easily accessible from every part of the office.

COVID-19 hit in the middle of development of our design, and rather than stop or continue business as usual, the HED team used the challenge as an opportunity to study what the post-COVID-19 workspace could be. The design team’s focus changed from thinking of the office as a space to house all employees under one roof into a space to provide a HUB that reflects the HED LA culture. The team pivoted to augment the ability for the space to inspire and innovate. Private offices were eliminated, shared spaces were increased, and the entire office space was transformed into an active, collaborative HUB that attracts staff back to the office for the type of work it supports.”

Architectural firm DesignInc recently moved into a new office in Adelaide, Australia, which they designed themselves.

“In designing a new studio, DesignInc Adelaide began by challenging their thinking in how they use space. They considered areas that add the most value to daily activities, identified zones underutilised in their existing fitout and generated discussions about how the built environment could improve creativity and interactions within the studio. They proposed that the activities of the studio should be front and centre, showcasing the way they work. During all stages of the project, the design team celebrated the process of design and hands-on learning by workshopping ideas and displaying concepts for comment. Proximity to the new space provided an opportunity to use the project as a teaching tool for graduates during construction.

The traditional reception was reduced to a compact service desk and the working space was enlarged to include collaboration benches and a purpose-built virtual reality suite. Generous natural light filters through the full height glazing that spans the open-plan work area. Air purifying plants are dispersed throughout active work and collaborative areas. Quiet spaces and flexible furniture in breakaway spaces enable people to step away from their desks. A large kitchen, social space and a staff entry with lockers service the team.

DesignInc Adelaide is committed to the reduction of waste through ongoing monitoring, education and the implementation of best practice within their studio. The fabric of the new studio incorporates materials that have recycled content and the existing air conditioning system and fire services were adaptively reused. They have considered the reduction of waste to landfill through dedicated recycling systems for paper, commingled, soft plastics and organics. Energy conservation has been achieved through programmed and motion-sensing LED lighting.

DesignInc Adelaide believes that the challenge of maintaining and improving their current level of environmental management and wellbeing requires a commitment to ongoing education and improvement. The new studio provides the opportunity to test the space as end-users and refine the design of sustainable workplaces,” says DesignInc.

Architecture firm Damon Farber recently hired architecture & interior design firm Studio BV to design their new office in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

“The concept for the new Damon Farber office is about natural materials and connections. This idea comes from the work they do, connecting people to nature and making strong relationships between the interior and exterior spaces. This is clear in their new office space with the connection of the deck to the cafe and work areas. The concept of connections is clear when you walk into the space. The visitor sees the work, both in process and the rich palette of materials that create the landscap es. The critique space and open work lounge invites teams and visitors to become part of the design process. Creating a welcoming and rich visual texture when you arrive will be the library and display built in wall.

This wall contains important materials and a monitor to display the work the team is creating. This lounge area becomes the bridge between the enclosed meeting spaces and the open work and collaboration areas. The work environment is flexible and transparent and puts the teams and work first, with multiple places to connect and draw. The cafe space becomes a focal point with great amenities and a connection to the roof top deck. This deck feature will be the heart of the office supporting work and play for the Damon Farber team and their clients.”

Interior architecture firm MIKOLAJSKAstudio recently moved into a new office / studio in Krakow, Poland, which they designed themselves.

“The main part of the office is on the ground floor level. On this floor, there is an entrance area with a reception, a studio, a study, a washroom, and the necessary communication space. The lobby has been kept in shades of green, turquoise and marine blue. It consists of a reception, customer area with a sofa and armchairs, a small demo kitchen and a staircase leading to the ground floor. Here we display a custom wallpaper designed by Ida Mikołajska, especially for this enclosure. It is over 40 sqm and embodies the originality of the place.

Behind a double glazed door is the office where customers are received. With the chosen arrangement, the place for the study was obvious. We decided to have two entrances to the room – one from the entrance area and the other from the offices. This solution proved to be very advantageous. During a meeting, one can easily ask any of the designers in or bring in the documentation. The chosen layout with the interconnecting office is also very attractive aesthetically. Thanks to the high, elegant doors we have been given the opportunity to present an enfilade of subsequent rooms. This solution allows showing the clients the studio without having to physically show them around the offices. This is quite an important function because we want the client to know that our office is a team of 20 architects and specialists coordinating the interior finishing process. The desk in the office was designed especially for this room.

The workshop was organized as a small open-space where designers work. This common workroom has already worked in our previous premises and we knew that we want to repeat this solution. From the workshop, we separated two small, glazed boxes. One of them houses a micro-office in which one can’t receive customers, but it works great as a place to hold telephone conversations in. The second box is occupied by a two-person team, responsible for orders and logistics. Although the rooms are very small in size, they do not feel this way due to glass walls. The studio has a separate entrance from the Lubelska street. The corridor in the interior leads to a washroom, where we proposed a grey-blue and cream finish; an interesting element is a mirror with its own lighting coming out of the wall and wallpaper with fish motif. Originally, one of five entrances to the premises was located in the corridor space. However, we decided to blind this passage. The resulting space was used for a large wardrobe for employees’ outerwear and for a server room. The ground floor level has been transformed to a large extent, due to an odd layout of the rooms. We managed to create a second washroom, social room, comfortable kitchen, conference and showroom and a large space for catalogues, samplers, samples, templates, etc.”

Architecture firm mode:lina recently moved into a new office in Poznan, Polan which they designed themselves.

“Taking into consideration the structure of a new office, designers decided to move all rooms that don’t need daylight to the far end of the office, with no access to the windows. Because of that the conference room, the phone booth, and the bathroom, along with the corridor (with a niche that hides a cupboard and a printer) were encapsulated in a simple and functional cubicle. The kitchen, with a big table, can be found right after entering the workshop, and all workspaces are laid along the glazed facade – in order to provide enough natural light.

The studio was designed with “jezycka” (name of the headquarters district) grandiose, connecting cozy atmosphere with industrial finishing. The functional cubicle was finished from the outside with a spacious mosaic made of clinker brick, which came to be by irregularly placing bricks on top of each other

Apart from the visual impact it also serves as acoustic isolation – chiseled wall of bricks, thanks to its openwork style – boosts the sound reflection inside of the workshop. The entrance to the cubicle was finished with pine plywood, which completes the feeling of a “brick house” inside of the building.

Just as a house has a long table to fit everybody in, so does the mode:lina™ – it stands right next to its heart – the kitchen, right in the centre of the office. It is here where all the food is consumed, TV series binged and where all the coffee chatter is. This home sweet home feeling is completed by carpets laid out across the entire studio – also serving for better acoustics. The comfort of sound was one of many priorities for this project – that’s why we used acoustic panels to finish the bathroom and the phone booth from within.

Budget and material: apart from the previously mentioned bricks and pine plywood, the remaining elements of the workshop were finished on a budget. The floor across the entire space is a simple concrete screed reaching back to the development phase, cleansed and secured with adequate lacquer, from under which traces of the studio renovation are visible to this day. The ceiling also reflects that – electricians’ schematic drawings still show how the lighting is dispersed throughout.

The cherry on the top of this pie – the collaboration with the exceptional artist – Paweł Swanski – who graced the studio’s ceiling joist, running above the entire office, with a spectacular mural channeling animalistic motives present even in the street’s name: Zwierzyniecka, where our station is located – right next to the Old ZOO in Poznań.

The conference room was designed with the same sentiment. It’s “theatrical” heavy curtains on each wall reduce reverberation that happens during various meetings.”

Architecture firm SRG Partnership recently moved into a new office in Portland, Oregon, which they designed themselves.

“The studio is filled with a range of spaces to encourage gathering, spontaneous conversations, curiosity and knowledge. An open materials library in the mezzanine is easily viewable and accessible to all. A central kitchen area, the heart of the studio, fosters camaraderie and doubles as a meeting space. Open project pods, where teams display current work, are active meeting and learning areas inspiring ideas and dialogue. Finally, a dedicated maker space encourages design exploration and creativity.

Diverse Work Environments

To complement the open and transparent layout, the design provides options to accommodate different working styles utilizing a mix of personal desk locations and densities, plus private areas for small teams and individuals to retreat and focus when needed. Mezzanine workspaces overlook the main level cater to staff desiring quieter, yet still connected, spaces.

Sustainability

Targeting LEED Platinum, the office is flooded with natural light and boasts demonstrated energy savings of over 30% compared to a code building. LED lighting leads the way at 50% less connected load than a typical building. Daylight sensors, programmable time clocks and dimmable settings reduce energy use from lighting even further, while adjustable shades manage direct sunlight.

Biophilia

Based on the belief that “buildings are habitats for people,” spaces intentionally connect to nature. Lush trees outside the oversized windows complement ample foliage throughout the interiors; large-scale ceiling fans mimic natural breezes for thermal and airflow variability; and the row of east-facing windows provides dynamic and diffuse light that shifts throughout the day. Raw, naturally textured concrete merges with cross-laminated timber (CLT) at the mezzanine, pods, kitchen and entry.

Innovation

The design incorporates cross-laminated timber (CLT), demonstrating the materials use as a viable solution in lieu of concrete or steel, exemplifiying the firm’s commitment to exploration. Manufactured from sustainably harvested timber with notable thermal performance, natural carbon sequestration and fire resistance, CLT’s warmth and elegance are a natural fit for the office, paying tribute to the culture of research and the discovery of environmentally responsible building materials.

The offices enable the firm to thoughtfully evaluate how design can permeate all aspects of its practice. The workplace exemplifies the firm’s values of openness, collaboration, and the way an environment can foster innovation and inspire excellence. As architects who hold fast to a passion to build better spaces for a better world, the studio has helped transform the firm’s culture of design.”

Architecture firm SGKS Architects moved into a new office in Abbotsford, Australia which they designed themselves.

“Our objective with this project was to create a new home for our second-generation architectural practice – a contemporary studio space that would reflect the practice’s heritage and grow with it in the future.

Located alongside the Yarra on a prominent Victoria Street site, the 135-square-metre office occupies a ground-floor tenancy of the Sanctuary apartment development. Bold geometry and honest materials create a masculine aesthetic. Raw concrete floors and columns contrast with timber-battened ceiling panels, while trailing greenery softens the hard edges. Frameless glass panels play with ideas of openness and enclosure, ensuring visual connections throughout the space while maintaining privacy where it’s needed.

Banks of smart desks provide a flexible open-plan layout – they can be reconfigured from meeting tables to individual work stations as the team evolves. The craft of making buildings has always been central to the firm’s ethos, so space for founder Peter Sgourakis’s hand drafting was accommodated in the design. Custom storage was installed, along with mobile pinboards to display work in progress. A well-loved print of Portofino from the original studio recalls the practice’s 40-year history.

The studio’s trademark crosshair motif is embedded in the design, creating a subtly branded interior. It appears as a window decal and again in the custom shelving unit suspended from a concrete pillar. Designed by director Henry Sgourakis, this finely detailed unit celebrates its own construction, with unpolished welds and a lustrous patina. Elsewhere, streamlined furniture from Space and Arthur G finishes the interior,” says SGKS Studio.

Architecture firm Adam Kane Architects recently moved into a new office in Melbourne, Australia, which they designed themselves.

“The inspiring new workspace is complemented by a number of custom made fittings and furniture pieces, creating a unique office that provides a glimpse into the future direction for the practice.

Brooding and elegant, the use of a rich grey hue in the architraves, ceiling and walls is cleverly contrasted by the abundance of natural light that floods the space.
On the ground floor, a small powder rooms sits next to a narrow staircase, discreetly hidden by a large, unassuming pivot door.

On the first floor, there is a subtle separation between the meeting room and main workspace, with a transition in floor levels ensuring that the spaces are kept individual. Custom steel-framed doors that stretch 3.6m high from floor to ceiling also allow the spaces to be closed off entirely, bringing flexibility to the office as a whole.

The bronze joinery ‘block’ is a feature of the workspace, creating a bold focal point that cleverly divides the formal and informal zones of the space. Clad in panels of custom dipped bronze, the block provides an everchanging play of light across its patinaed surface whilst concealing the kitchenette and sample library on its reverse.

The purposeful layering of grey provides a soothing backdrop to the office, allowing a collection of custom pieces to be accentuated, including a five-metre long, timber-veneer desk purpose built in it’s place. Another custom feature is a marble table supported by three polished plaster ‘pillars’, providing a place to gather and collaborate in the corner. Whilst the stone offcuts from the tabletop were used to create a secondary side table.”

Consulting firm Intercommercial recently hired architecture and interior design firm Ian Moore Architects to design their new office in Sydney, Australia.

“A number of irregular sized columns and misaligned walls, coupled with an external curtain wall that is not aligned with the space, made a regular plan layout extremely difficult. A concept of thick storage walls to the sides of the space was developed, with a series of subtle curves introduced to disguise the irregularities. This storage joinery also has a number of different expressions, open pigeon-hole shelving, bookshelves, concealed storage and fixed panels to the face of columns.

The curved panels allow a visual flow to the sidewalls, which softly transition to the glazed partitions of the cellular office spaces. The modest budget was spent primarily on this joinery and new furniture, while the existing lighting and air-conditioning grilles were rearranged within the existing ceiling to suit the new layout. The new joinery was coloured a light grey to closely match the natural anodised aluminium window framing and two 1970s tub chairs in red fabric were reused from the client’s previous office to provide a small burst of colour. The final element is a mid grey linen curtain to provide privacy from the communal corridor,” said Ian Moore Architects.

Architecture firm Partisans recently moved into a new office in Toronto, Canada, which they designed themselves.

“Plenty of social space was key to the firm that generates best ideas through group brainstorms and lively debate. The state-of-the-art-kitchen by Aya Kitchens, features a 22 foot long island for group gatherings over food, drinks and ample amounts of caffeine, seen in the five different coffee machines available. True to their eco-friendly approach in architecture, PARTISANS encourages biking to work by offering private unisex bathrooms that feature showers and comforable change-rooms. Dogs are welcome and get the chance to relax in the PARTISANS-designed wooden bubble prototype, made originally for Pepsi

Co in a foresight mandate PARTISANS had in 2015. Original pieces of mid-century modern furniture complements the space, with areas for relaxing or deep-thinking. An open and airy feel is achieved through the light color-pallette, allowing the prototypes, sketches, and art to be at the focal point. PARTISANS stays true to the ‘practice what you preach’ saying and surround themselves with objects of art and beauty, to draw inspiration in their work. PARTISANS has continued to support the local arts scene, and the space features work by artists Kent Monkman, Curtis Santiago, Erin Armstrong, and Scott Macfarldand, to name a few, some of whom have used the space in an ad-hoc residency style offered by the studio. This stems true in their collaboration process, in which they often dive into the specific details to understand manufacturing elements that can be reworked or improved. With that, PARTISANS has offered part of the studio to Maffeis, an engineering firm out of Italy who they collaborate with.

Featured throughout the space are multiple prototypes from previous projects. The kitchen showcases PARTISANS’ Cubey System that debuted at IDS and won best in show in 2017. The intention of the open shelving system is to be transparent and ultra low impact with just 18 inch dimensions to save space. The large boardroom features an ETFE bubble wall 4 feet deep, developed as a prototype for SideWalk Labs. Other prototypes throughout the space include a sculptural mahogany wood piece, a memento to the cutting-edge Bar Raval design; the swirling design piece hanging from the ceiling is a prototype for an upcoming restaurant build; models of the Orbit masterplans, and more.”
