Architecture firm HED recently moved into a new office in Los Angeles, California, which they designed themselves.

“The new HED LA office is designed to foster creativity, promote collaboration, and support the well-being of our community. Activity is focused on the HUB: an open space that is the center of activity for the entire office. The HUB extends from one end of the building to the other. On one end is the central production facility, with the model shop/maker space, material library, pin-up spaces, interactive projection walls, and flexible team “war room” areas. On the opposite end is the “front door” of arrival, reception, display area, meeting rooms, lounging and casual seating for clients and staff. Connecting the two ends is the café, with and expansive island that functions as a community gathering space and collaboration zone with adjacent collaboration booths that add another layer of collaboration and community engagement. Free-address and dedicated workstation areas flow around the HUB, and pin-up and spontaneous collaboration spaces extend throughout the entire space. In addition, areas of more quiet focus ranging in size from individual to 2-4- and 4–6-person small huddles, to large and extra-large conference rooms are easily accessible from every part of the office.

COVID-19 hit in the middle of development of our design, and rather than stop or continue business as usual, the HED team used the challenge as an opportunity to study what the post-COVID-19 workspace could be. The design team’s focus changed from thinking of the office as a space to house all employees under one roof into a space to provide a HUB that reflects the HED LA culture. The team pivoted to augment the ability for the space to inspire and innovate. Private offices were eliminated, shared spaces were increased, and the entire office space was transformed into an active, collaborative HUB that attracts staff back to the office for the type of work it supports.”

Advertising company Saatchi & Saatchi recently hired architecture and interior design studio Blitz to design their new office in El Segundo, California.

“As we dove into Saatchi & Saatchi’s world and learned about how their teams developed projects it became clear that the creatives needed a safe space to build and break and re-build ideas and concepts before formally pitching to their project leads. The “idea” became its own constituent in the project – something to be considered spatially and solved for specifically. Whenever a design decision needed to be made, we returned to the question: “what is in the best service to protect the idea?”.

Our primary Client shared a desire to create a new home for the agency that supported exploration and fostered curiosity. The meandering path provides views across open “fields” (neighborhoods) and links up a series of protective seed pods (project areas / rooms) for safe and hidden idea generation; and garden walls to define the crops and showcase / pin-up the harvest. Apertures and strategic wayfinding allow the project to unfold rather than revealing itself all at once,” says Blitz.

Clothing company Aether Apparel hired architecture and development firm Assembledge+ to design their new office in Los Angeles, California.

“Born out of the desire for men’s and women’s collections to look at home in the city but withstand the outdoors, Aether’s products reflect a pure expression of form and function. Aether Apparel engaged Assembledge+ to renovate an existing 1953 bow truss building and design a new, dynamic headquarters to echo the brand’s value and provide for a transparent and creative workspace.

The solution endeavoured to celebrate the original building by opening up the original structure and creating a communal and flexible workspace, partitioned into workstation areas, a design studio, communal areas and a conference room adjacent to a showroom.

Large window openings along the southern concrete façade fill the space with natural light and contribute to the sense of openness. The project’s clean lines, predominately white interiors with wooden details and exposed warehouse space create an airy, open office conducive to communication with a clean and modern aesthetic.

In the spirit of their extreme passion for the environment, the client requested the space to be as eco-conscious as possible and utilize solar energy for all the electrical requirements. A cooled roof made of foam was utilized to allow for all the wood structure and decking to be exposed while reflecting 80% of the sun’s rays. Outside, a canopy composed entirely out of solar panels provides shade from the southern sun and powers the entire office with solar energy, while putting an extra 30% back into the grid.”

Video technology studio Disguise recently hired architecture firm CHA:COL to design their new office in Los Angeles, California.

“A large portion of the space is centered around a real-time 3D stage simulator with a time-line based sequencer, a video playback engine and a content mapper, all integrated into one software platform.

Disguise approached CHA:COL to encourage the spatial design of their Los Angeles space to function as a 3D visual artist’s paradise while feeling like an extension of a family room. The existing warehouse had a fairly low span timber column grid. The concept sought to incorporate a custom-built real-time mapping stage with operable garage doors, flexible open spaces, a conference room and a twenty foot long steel pantry countertop bar to allow large social events like training, collaboration and entertainment. Custom assemblages enabled flexible usage. Sessions included for example, a theater director and a technology team mapping out and programming a Broadway stage performance with an interactive three dimensional background. Alternatively, for intensive coding and hardware training sessions using projection mapping and music.

As with most creative video workspace projects, the timeline was extremely constrained, so custom elements like the long span countertop or stage screen were pre-built and assembled on site.

The final space is a manifestation of creative brief by Disguise to encourage active real-time performance conceptualization, collaboration and visualization by artists, technologists and producers within a casual space, as opposed to a large industrial soundstage,” says CHA:COL

Advertising agency TBWA\Chiat\Day hired architecture and interior design firm Spatial Affairs Bureau to design their new office in Los Angeles, California.

“The Walled City’ masterplan, refurbishment and remodel for various account areas, coffee bar, and the Central Square, plus custom furniture as next stage to the Clive Wilkinson seminal 120,000 sq ft head office for this high profile advertising agency.

An ongoing masterplan and incremental remodel of the high-profile 1998 Clive Wilkinson Architects-designed ‘city in a box’ for top advertising agency TBWA\Chiat|Day’s Los Angeles Headquarters.

Spatial Affairs extended the metaphor to a ‘walled city’ environment, where hallmarks of the 25 year-old CWA scheme – such as exposed plywood and primary colors – are viewed as sacrosanct vestiges of the city’s earlier life.

The inner surface of the exterior wall is given a heightened identity as the container, and a new palette of materials such as red oak, and almost-black and occasional fluorescent coloyrs pin-point a late 20-teens moment,” says Spatial Affairs Bureau.

Real estate investment company Prologis recently hired architecture and interior design firm RMW architecture & interiors to design their new office in El Segundo, California.

“Prologis needed a multifunctional space – an inviting lounge to entertain brokers, and an efficient workspace for employees. While these two functions would live in the same office space, the intent was an outward-facing lounge to attract visitors, with the offices visually separated from guests and passersby.

With tailored yet comfortable details and accents that reflect sophisticated Los Angeles culture, the spaces seemly connect, with workspace and entertainment spaces highlighted by an architectural portal fashioned from warm walnut. The lounge, reminiscent of a refined retreat, serves multiple functions – living room, bar, café, and casual meeting space,” says RMW architecture & interiors.

Digital production company All3Media recently hired architecture and interior design firm Hawkins\Brown to design their new office in Los Angeles, California.

“In response to a new location and an expanding portfolio of production labels, All3Media needed to rethink their existing space to create a more flexible, creative and professional home in the heart of Silicon Beach, Los Angeles.

Having previously operated across a single, cramped floor plate, All3Media needed a more space to cater for an expanding collection of companies, greater efficiency and variety of working space and an improved identity to create a new ‘home’ for the brand.

The renovation doubles the existing commercial area across two floors. The introduction of a large auditorium stair links both levels, not only providing much needed visual and physical connections, but also doubling as a screening space to showcase new material to the whole office. Level 4 acts as the production house – where production teams operate out of shared offices around the building’s

Lobby and multifunctional space perimeter. Open plan desking has been introduced to improve communication across teams as well as increasing efficiency. Dedicated edit bays are located within the heart of the plan – doubling their previous editing capability. A reconfigured reception space creates a more welcoming arrival point at the bottom of the auditorium.

Level 5 is home to the corporate and creative activities, with production labels housed in their own glass fronted offices, with shared meeting and huddle rooms clustered around the central core. A large social space connects with the auditorium to provide a focal point for the exchange of ideas and social discourse.

The renovation offered the opportunity to create a new identity for All3Media. The introduction of a sophisticated color palette across both floors, as well as new lighting, custom furniture, patterns and signage create a contemporary aesthetic that is seen as a new home for the American arm of the business,” says Hawkins\Brown.

Global marketing and event production company NVE Experience Agency recently moved into a new headquarters in Los Angeles, California, which the company designed itself.

“The central foundation to NVE’s work is creativity which made it important to design a space that cultivates inspiration and innovation. As you enter NVE’s office, employees, clients and guests will feel inspired through an infusion of colorful elements that evoke the agency’s mantra of ‘The Polished Hustle.’ The entryway provides an immediate peek into the diverse life at NVE including views of lush greenery complimented by slate-colored walls and pockets of modern furniture, while neon signs showcasing the agency’s mantras juxtapose carefully selected art pieces from the likes of Ed Ruscha, Mr. Brainwash and Roy Lichtenstein, along with a custom mural by nThankYouX. Throughout the entire 12,000 square foot space NVE installed massive planters with Sansevieria (Snake Plants) that absorb toxins and constantly purify the air, ensuring fresh oxygen is plentiful.

Concentration

NVE implemented specific architectural details to facilitate deep work and concentration to avoid distractions that diminish productivity. Employees working under an Aktura Softgrid Wave soundproofed ceiling are able to focus at their custom-fabricated wood desks built by NVE’s Treehouse Fabrication studio. In addition, teams have access to seven distinctly configured, high-tech conference rooms that anchor the office with vibrant interior design touches for brainstorms, client meetings and video conferences. Three dedicated phone booths are open for private calls while ‘The Library’ provides an area of respite with a curated shelf of books about leadership, marketing, design and cultural expertise.

Collaboration

Face-to-face communication and open conversations were key principles in building the new environment. Leading into the open workspace concept, stunning views of the Hollywood Hills and Beverly Hills all play backdrop to the larger cross-functional space known as ‘The Arena’ that acts as the central hub for all-staff meetings, training sessions, and company events, complete with stadium style seating and the latest A/V technology. The adjacent ‘Café’ is bustling with employees taking advantage of the modern amenities including kombucha and cold brew taps, often becomes the common meeting place to catch the epic sunsets at the end of the day. Collaboration was key in developing the floorplan and seating arrangements to mirror how NVE teams work together across the country to create best-in-class experiences for clients.”

Private agriculture company recently hired architecture firm Scrafano Architects and interior design firm Philippa Radon Design Studio to design their new office in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles.

“Scrafano Architects collaborated with the award-winning interior designer Philippa Radon to create a contemporary design, branding image, and layout for MMG Agribusiness’s new corporate headquarters. This prime Golden Triangle Beverly Hills location was formerly a dark and sedate law office with heavy wood paneling, a dropped acoustical panel ceiling, narrow hallways, cramped offices, and very little light.

Our goal was to create an open floor plan filled with natural light and near panoramic views to the surrounding hills, city and Pacific Ocean. The space now has a welcoming entrance for guests, a central glassed walled conference room, high exposed industrial loft ceilings, an open work area, and a communal kitchen.

The visual and physical connections between the spaces and collective working areas encourage communication and collaboration. Material palate is drawn from warm earth colors informed by the client’s date, grape, citrus and olive groves, with occasional lively bright influences,” said Scrafano Architects.

Create Advertising, an entertainment marketing agency with work spanning from theatrical to television, from gaming to VR, and everything in-between, recently moved into a new office in Los Angeles, California, designed bySander Architects and Nine Dot Design.

“Sander Architects were in charge of the build-out and Nine Dot Design was tasked with furnishing and designing the open and private office areas. These included the reception, breakout areas, client bay, executive offices and kitchen and dining area. When the clients came to me, they had referenced wanting a modern-eclectic space that made the employees feel comfortable and at home due to the long hours typical of the advertising world. With Amber Interiors as the main point of reference from the client, I wanted to design the interior to feel inviting, lived-in and creative.

I achieved this by mixing modern furniture with bold colors, vintage rugs and textiles, textured wood and tons and tons of plants. Plants were one of the most important components for warming up the space to bring the outside in, as well as, an extension of the amazing views. With the kitchen and dining area especially, I wanted to create an escape for employees to come to relax, socialize and recharge, so I added a ton of hanging plants to take up visual space and again bring in some greenery and life to a modern interior.

Since the office is set up with mostly private office spaces, employees spend a lot of time in their office’s meeting, editing, writing, etc. I wanted the breakout and social areas to feel like the perfect escape and to give them the opportunity to get out of their offices to meet, eat, etc. Another key component was to source locally to the Los Angeles area. The majority of furniture came from local vendors and all accessories, rugs, pillows, etc. are from local, independent shops.”
